A group of over 200 students standing in a field doing soil sampling for an FFA contest

On September 29, Helix FFA hosted the 2026 Blue Mountain District Soil Judging contest. With over 200 students from 13 schools, the competition is being held between Reeder’s (Sand Hollow Farms) and Rosselle’s Farm. The contest consisted of three soil pits that students judged based on the following criteria:
1 Be able to accurately identify soil characteristics
2 Understand how soil plays a role in land use and management
3 Understand how soil plays a role in the environment
4 Develop analytical skills in the comparison of different soil samples
5 Develop reasoning skills for effective and accurate evaluation

Students got the opportunity to interact with and be guided by industry professionals from NRCS, OSU Research Station, Pacific Ag, and other local entities. We were excited for Helix to host this year's contest! Thank you Mrs. Nelson for working so hard to organize and work with everyone involved to bring this opportunity to Helix for our community and students.

Helix FFA would like to extend a thank you to the Reeder and Rosselle families, the Helix FF Alumni & Supporters, NRCS, OSU Research Station, Don Wysocki, our scorecard volunteers, Helix School District, booster Club, Katie Zmuda, Graham Construction, Northwest Ag Services, Blue Mountain District FFA Advisors, and community. Thank you to everyone who helped run this contest by scoring, making lunches, donating time and money and overall making this contest possible!
