The Helix School District realizes the Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) approach has been arduous for both students and teachers. The staff understands some of the frustrations and issues that arose during the first few weeks of 1st quarter. Therefore, the Helix School District has decided to adjust our grading system so that each 7th – 12th grade student will initially receive a pass/fail grade for 1st quarter which ends on Friday, October 30th. At the end of this quarter, copies of all grades and percentages will be made and kept until the end of 2nd quarter, Friday, January 15th. At the end of 2nd quarter, 7th – 12th grade teachers will evaluate all students’ grades for both quarters. At this time, teachers will determine the best scenario for each student. If the average of the two quarters raises the student’s first quarter grade, the student will be given the higher average grade for 1st quarter. If their 2nd quarter grade is lower than their 1st quarter, they will receive the grades they earned. Averaging of the grades will not be used if it lowers either of their quarter grades.
SCENERIO #1: If the student received an “F” for 1st quarter and a “C” for 2nd quarter, we will give the student a “D” for 1st quarter and a “C” for 2nd quarter.
SCENERIO #2: If the student received an “A” for 1st quarter and a “C” for 2nd quarter, we will give the student an “A” for 1st quarterand a “C” for 2nd quarter.
SCENERIO #3: If the student received a “C” for 1st quarter and an “A” for 2nd quarter, we will give the student a “B” for 1st quarterand an “A” for 2nd quarter.
It is our intention to give each student every opportunity to succeed and this flexibility will hopefully assist with that.
